The ¹û¶³´«Ã½ of Worcester supports a range of internally and externally accredited recognition and reward schemes which recognise staff’s outstanding contributions to teaching and learning support.
Our commitment to supporting staff in this area is reflected in our Realising Teaching Excellence Strategy, launched in 2019, which has resulted in over 75% of staff holding a category of Advance HE Fellowship status at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½.
Each year, we proudly celebrate outstanding educators and innovative teaching practices with our Annual Celebration Awards Evening, highlighting the dedication and impact of our teaching community.
Advance HE Teaching Excellence Awards
The external Advance HE Teaching Excellence Awards showcase the transformative impact of teaching in the UK higher education sector, celebrating excellence across individuals, teams, and institutions. ¹û¶³´«Ã½ of Worcester staff are supported to make a direct claim to Advance HE for these awards following a shortlisting and nomination process internally.
National Teaching Fellowship (NTF)
The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) recognises, rewards and celebrates individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in higher education while the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) celebrates outstanding collaborative work that has had a transformative impact on teaching and learning and highlights the vital role of teamwork in shaping the future of higher education.
Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE)
Each year the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ of Worcester can make up to 3 nominations for the National Teaching Fellow (NTF) scheme and 1 for the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE).
The Worcester Scheme
The Worcester Scheme is ¹û¶³´«Ã½ of Worcester’s internal CPD Scheme which is accredited by Advance HE. This scheme supports experienced staff in achieving recognition for their teaching and learning support in higher education. It offers various routes to Advance HE fellowship recognition, including Associate Fellow, Fellow and Senior Fellow based on member of staff role and experience.
The scheme supports staff with information and writing workshops as well as mentoring. Applications are managed via the Worcester Scheme Blackboard site, with submission deadlines throughout the year.

Advance HE Principal Fellowship
Principal Fellowship is awarded directly through Advance HE for highly experienced individuals whose practice involves a sustained record of effectiveness in strategic leadership of high-quality learning. The ¹û¶³´«Ã½’s Teaching excellence award lead (TEAL) and Deputy TEAL support interested individuals through a peer support network.
The ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Teaching Award Scheme
The ¹û¶³´«Ã½ of Worcester Teaching Award Scheme (UWTAS) is an internal Scheme which recognises and rewards excellent, innovative and inspiring practice in teaching, and in supporting and leading learning. The UW TAS aligns with the Advance HE Professional Standards Framework (PSF, 2023), the nationally recognised framework for benchmarking success within Higher Education teaching and learning support. In recognising and promoting achievement in teaching, and in supporting and leading learning, UW TAS generates evidence for career progression for Advance HE Senior Fellow applications, UW promotion schemes, Professorships, and nomination to the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme.
Awards are available in three categories:
Eligibility includes full and part-time staff who are Fellows (or Associates) of Advance HE or have completed a PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in HE, or similar qualification accredited against PSF2023, with at least two years of teaching experience on ¹û¶³´«Ã½ of Worcester programmes. Staff in partner organisations who meet these criteria and undertake significant teaching on university-approved courses are also eligible.

The Dr Lesley Spiers Award for Outstanding Contribution to Developing Excellence in Learning and Teaching
This internal award was commissioned in memory of Dr Lesley Spiers whose passion for supporting and mentoring staff has left a lasting legacy. The award recognises outstanding achievement by an academic member of university staff who has made a significant contribution to supporting the development of colleagues in learning and teaching, through mentoring, coaching, disseminating good practice or otherwise promoting the professional development of staff.
